White House Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week
Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.
Although the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges
Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
