Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
