Lackluster The Software Giant's Results Erase More Than $70bn Off Market Value, Fueling AI Bubble Concerns.

The tech firm's disappointing latest earnings have erased over $70 billion from the worth of the enterprise software giant established by billionaire Larry Ellison, heightening escalating fears of a overheated market in artificial intelligence stocks.

Steep Share Price Decline Follows Sales Miss

Stock in the firm fell sharply by eleven and a half percent in after-hours trading after it reported a weaker-than-anticipated 14% rise in revenues to $16bn in the most recent quarter, while simultaneously announced plans to increase its artificial intelligence investment by about $15 billion.

The enterprise recorded disappointing quarterly revenues for the quarter ending in November, with revenue growth at its key cloud services division expanding at a more modest rate than forecast, at 34%.

Investor Concerns Over Investment and Leverage

Shareholders were also disappointed by a more moderate 68 percent increase in revenues from its infrastructure business.

At the same time, the market were spooked by the firm's increased forecasts for AI investment. It now expects capital expenditure to jump by 40 percent to $fifty billion dollars, with the vast majority of the increase allocated for building cloud infrastructure.

This aggressive spending plan comes amid a growing debt pile, with Oracle's long-term debt having surged by 25% over the past year to reach $99.9 billion.

"Honestly, the earnings release was not catastrophic, but it served to confirm fears around heavy AI spending, financed by debt, with an unknown timeline for profitability," noted a market analyst.

Broader Market Implications and Industry Concerns

Sustained exuberance about the capabilities of AI technology has led to a surge in market capitalizations in the past year, but there has been a rising number of warnings from policymakers and business leaders who warn equity prices could correct sharply if investors become let down by the progress or adoption of AI solutions.

While Oracle has become an important technology provider creating enterprise solutions for major firms worldwide and has more recently grown rapidly in the cloud sector, there are increasing concerns about how dependent tech giants are growing on mutual investment within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle reported that its metric of remaining performance obligations jumped by 440 percent over the past year. However, analysts were cautious when it emerged that these commitments were propelled by large deals from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"While these are two solid customers, it will not allay fears that big tech's AI investments are becoming circular, which leaves it vulnerable to a loss of market faith," stated a market strategist.

"Overall, strong backlog increase was not enough to calm fears about AI and the enormous amount of investment spending needed by firms to construct AI capacity."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Shares

Additional AI and tech-related stocks also fell in after-hours trading following the Oracle results. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price dropped by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock dropped by 0.3 percent.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares fell by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
